Unless you sail, the only way you’ll get into Datai Bay and onto the beautiful white sand beach is to stay at one of the two exclusive resorts who ‘own’ it.

It’s ideal for honeymooners and those who don’t want to be cheek by jowl with hundreds of other guests.
That’s not to say that its small – with over 120 rooms – it’s a community in itself, of like-minded guests who nevertheless seek exclusivity amidst the tropical rain forest but within a short walk to the shore and its gorgeous beach.

The Andaman

Choose the Andaman when you want to be with family and to keep them occupied from dawn to dusk with endless activities. The landscaped pools are shallow enough in most places for children to paddle.
The 178 rooms are categorised by their position within the complex and do not differ in facilities, presentation or standard unless you take a suite.
The rooms are clean, smart, sizeable and presentable but not remarkable – but then how much time are you going to spend in yours?
The restaurants are well presented, from the snack bar (Jentayu Lounge) in the huge atrium entrance, with several interesting cuisine choices in each, through to the sand-floored Beach Bar and restaurant by the water’s edge.
The hotel will organise day trips out to The Field of Burnt Rice, Hot Springs, Telaga Tujuh (The Seven Wells) or boat tours of the mangroves, diving expeditions and a visit to Langkawi’s underwater world—an underground tunnel that runs through an enormous aquarium.
The Andaman has its own coral reef conservation initiative and ‘laboratory’ that young and old alike can participate in.
Not for rent – at The Andaman
The Andaman is much more of a ‘resort’ than The Datai. Both have their merits and a brief look at their websites, shown below, will give you the ‘feel’ of each to help you decide.
In a nutshell, if you’re taking a young family, then choose The Andaman; if you want to pamper yourself then choose The Datai – simples!
The Datai Bay area itself is virtually devoid of tourist attractions – so you really come here to escape from it all.
The pitch perfect Els Golf Course
If you do want to get out from either hotel, then your best bet is to rent a car to give you constant flexibility – and if you’ve a mind, there’s a superb golf course ‘The Els,’ just five minutes’ drive from either resort.
It’s beautifully groomed and we only wish we’d had more time to play the course or stop for lunch in its bright and airy restaurant.
Either of these hotels is perfect if, ideally, you want to stay safe and secure in one place; to chill out and simply immerse yourself in pleasure.
